SDSL or Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line is a DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) variant. SDSL Broadband provides a high-speed internet access service, with matching upstream and downstream data rates ranging from several speeds from 512K to 2MB. With SDSL Broadband, data can be sent to the internet from the client machine or received from the Internet with equal bandwidth availability in both directions, hence its name Symmetric.

In most often cases, the DSL service is asymmetrical (ADSL), with the bulk of the bandwidth reserved for receiving data, not sending it because of the limited uploading known by users. However, unlike ADSL, it cannot co-exist with a conventional voice service on the same pair as it takes over the entire bandwidth. So using your phone line and the SDSL simultaneously is impossible. This broadband also runs at a contention ratio of 10:1 at the exchange compared to 20:1 or 50:1 for ADSL. This means that in a worst case scenario instead of sharing your connection with 19 or up to 49 other users, you'd only share it with 10.

Although SDSL is not available in all areas, speeds might vary depending upon your physical distance from local hubs and your provider. This broadband service is also a little more expensive from the other services, but well worth the difference for those with demanding upstream needs like small businesses. If you are a potential customer, don't even bother wondering what is behind the curtain. The telecom companies take care of the infrastructure, and you take care of the bill -- that's how it works. It doesn't matter if the "big tan telephone company cabinet" is involved or not -- you just want the service. Sure, it's interesting to know how stuff works, and it would be fun to drive by some box in the middle of some cornfield and know that your electrons are running through it, but it really doesn't matter, right? If the price is too high, you're not buying regardless of how the service is provisioned.

To answer the question, a T1 typically is nothing more than two copper pairs which are converted from analog to digital, with special conditioning (and signal repeaters if the distance requires them). If your location could get two additional regular phone lines, then you could probably get a T1 circuit without additional construction or trenching. If such additional work would be necessary, it's quite possible that you would not be charged for that work. In our industry, special construction costs are identified after the order is placed, and the customer can cancel the order with no penalty if the additional costs are not acceptable. It's not likely that construction costs can be identified prior to an order.

Most responsible internet providers will give you a dedicated internet connection at the full 1.5M speed. There are local "tier 2" providers that will purchase a certain bandwidth from an "upstream" provider, then resell it and oversell it. For instance, "Joe's Telecom" might buy a 45M DS-3 of internet access from AT&T. A DS-3 has enough bandwidth to support 28 T1 circuits. Joe will recognize that not every one of his customers will be using the full 1.5M at all times, so he will sell more than 28 T1 circuits -- this is overselling. So long as he watches his circuit utilization, and orders more bandwidth before the customers start crashing into each other, then all is well. But if he's like Comcast, and severely oversells, then customers' circuit performance will suffer. So you will want to know if your T1 circuit is dedicated access all the way to the internet backbone, or if it goes to Joe's concentrator where it is shared among his customers. If the service you get is from AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Business, Global Crossing, Qwest, Savvis, Internap, Level 3 and a few others, then you're dedicated. If it's from a local provider with a limited service area, it's probably shared bandwidth, and the pricing should be lower than from a dedicated provider. But....the quality defined by a Service Level Agreement (SLA) and QoS (Quality of Service) will also be lower.

Relative to a router, in your quote requests mention that you want "managed" service, which tells telecom companies that you want the T1 router to be included as part of their package. The T1 router is different than a typical "broadband" router one would get at a local electronics shop. T1 routers have built-in CSU/DSU functionality which assists in the synch up of the circuit. Some typical T1 routers are Cisco 1841 and Siemens 5940.

Almost 90% of the UK population now has broadband internet in favour of dial-up. But how many of those people are happy with their service?

Like your energy, phone, cable TV and even mortgage, sometimes you can get yourself a better deal by switching your service provider. So many companies now have a broadband service it's relatively easy to find a good deal if you shop around.

First off, consider how much you use your internet. Most ISP's have usage caps, which means that once you've used over a certain amount, you start paying. If you're a heavy net user, go for a higher limit. This mainly applies if you do a lot of music or video downloading, or other large files. Although looking at web pages is technically downloading, it's not enough to exceed a standard usage cap.

Top speed is another factor governed by how much you use the net, and what for. If you enjoy watching videos or downloading, you're going to need a faster speed than someone who just surfs. Having said that, the technology used in making websites now means that many pages have longer loading times, so a slower speed wouldn't suit an impatient surfer.

T1 carrier is one of the most popular leased line options for digital transmission that offers high speed internet connectivity at 1.544Mbits per second. A T1 line is comprised of 24 individual channels, each capable of transferring data at 64Kbits per second. With T1 Internet connection, you can have uninterrupted and reliable data transfer within seconds. In normal phone lines, voices are transmitted through copper wires as analog signal and you can transmit data at around 30 kilobits per seconds with your normal modem.

A T1 Internet connection, on the other hand, is capable of carrying 24 digitized voice channels at the speed of 1.544 megabits per second. A T1 carrier can carry 192,000 bytes of data per seconds ?nearly sixty times more data than that of a normal residential modem. T1 Internet connection is capable of providing uninterrupted data transmission which you would not get if you use ordinary modems. If you want to transmit audio or visual data through your residential modem or through your phone service you have high risk of getting jammed since the speed is so slow. With a T1 service, you can eliminate this risk significantly.

Internet service by service providers convert all voice calls as analog rather than in digital format, which not only takes longer time but frustrates customers now that high speed is available. With a T1 line, you not only increase the speed of your data transmission, but also save time for your valuable online work. With the advancement of fiber optics, lesser time is required to convert analog signals to digital format. Fiber optical wires are sometimes used for T1 line to provide maximum speed, although the normal wires are by copper. In case of ordinary modem or residential telephone connection, thin copper wire is used which can rarely carry much load at the time of transmission of data. In T1 Internet connection, broadband internet connection is used which ensures two-way transmission of data at a faster rate than any other method of transmission.

Apart from that, hundreds of users can comfortably share T1 connection, which is impossible if you use modems or telephone line or an ISDN line. It is economical to have T1 bandwidth if your business is small in size and internet is critical for your business. A Channel Service Unit (CSU) is used to connect non-data terminal equipment with a T1 Internet connection to get the desired T1 line speed. A CSU is a device which connects a leased line and remains attached to the customers system. The main objective of CSU is to encode data, which comes through a broadband T1 line. For the T1 connections, one needs to have a channel service unit.

T1 circuits work simultaneously with your existing phone wires and equipments, though you may require special jacks and connections and some alteration in the wiring to get T1 connection. It is the responsibility of your network service provider to install new wires and equipments according to the requirements. The connection not only runs through conventional metal wires but also runs through fiber optical wires, twisted pair copper wire, coaxial cable, digital microwave, and also through infrared. T1 Internet connection is used for linking remote LANs. It can also be utilized to bring Centrex service from the telephone companys central office to the business areas cost effectively.

While DSL is a quick and cost effective medium of acquiring high-speed bandwidth, it is usually not intended to support commercial applications or many users at a time. A T1 Internet connection is the ideal solution. Businesses mainly use two types of Internet access ?DSL and T1; and from though DSL is less expensive; it is not as reliable as T1 circuits. For installing T1 service, you need to spend the cost for T1 line price, which would include installation fee, although it is at times waived. Customers have an option to negotiate T1 prices but for this, they need to sign a 2 or 3 year term. Today getting a T1 price is easier than it used to be. The year moved on and the time was fast approaching when Santa was due to visit and lots and lots of anxious kids (and parents) waited to see if he'd bring one for them. Unfortunately, Mr. Nintendo's elves hadn't quite made enough. Well, to be honest, they hadn't made anywhere near enough which, I'm sure you'll agree, was a bit of a sod, and hardly anyone got one. We also had the problem with a company who took payment for a couple of thousand Wiis and then vanished without supplying any.

Anyway, we're now into 2008 and things don't really seem to have improved. There still don't seem to be any Wii Consoles in the shops and when they do turn up, it's like a plague of locusts descending on the shop and they've sold out within the first hour. They seem to have a few available in the US, but of course the voltage is different and it won't work on our side of the Atlantic. You can buy a Japanese spec Nintendo Wii from a few places but you then have a warranty problem. So where do you get one?

The best places are Amazon UK and, not surprisingly, eBay UK. Amazon seems to have a few in stock most of the time but they can be expensive. I have an Amazon Affiliate shop for the Nintendo Wii and at the time I'm writing this, I've sold 8 this week but only three of them at the RRP of 179. The others have been somewhere over 250. eBay have new Nintendo Wii at anything between 180 and 300 available from UK based Business Sellers and you have the security of PayPal. Just make sure that your seller has good feedback for selling the same sort of stuff and, if possible, get an email address and phone number. Happy Hunting!

The Laptop Disassembly Guide

This guide is to provide some help for those who want to disassemble their laptop. You have to be sure that the problem you face is from the hardware, and that your laptop is not under warranty, since that laptop disassembly void warranty.

Search on the net for service manuals some are free and other cost around 6$ . Not find your model ? download some free service manual from different brands and read them many steps are the same in laptop disassembly. But i do recommended to find the manual that fit your laptop because you may need to know the part number of the defective part to change it.

Now you have to prepare a clean working area with small box for the different parts and their screws, and maybe a pen and a paper to remember particular step.

To disassemble the computer, you need the tools below:

Wrist ground strap and conductive mat for preventing electrostatic discharge
Small Phillips screw driver
Flat head screw driver
Hexagonal driver
Tweezers

NOTE : The screws for the different components vary in size. During the disassembly process, group the screws with the corresponding components to avoid mismatch when putting back the components. When you remove the stripe cover, please be careful not to scrape the cover.

In most of laptop you can actually access by the base to these bays :

battery
memory
hard disk

Remove them all, to remove the optical disk just release the screw securing the optical disk module,push the ODD module using a screwdriver and remove the ODD module from the main unit.

After that look on the keyboard area to find how to remove the keyboard for example with an Acer aspire 5100, you have to remove the middle cover from the edge of the middle cover and carefully detach the middle cover, then you just have to release the two screws securing the keyboard plate and carefully detach the keyboard plate from the edge of the keyboard plate finish by release the keyboard FFC lock carefully because it is fragile. Then remove the keyboard plate.

After that you can either disassembly the lcd module or try to access the motherboard.

For the LCD module carefully disconnect the LCD cable and any other cable that you can see, release any screws holding the LCD module on the bottom side of the main unit, release any other screws securing the LCD hinges on the main unit, then detach the LCD module from the main unit.

For the motherboard every model are different then you have to explore by yourself, but not forget to read some service manuals before. You can find some free service manuals at laptop support. I hope that this will give some help.

Carnival Elation Cruise Review

The Elation is a ship built in 1998 for Carnival Cruise Lines. It was the first ship to have the azipod propulsion system. Everything you read about the Elation will include a small blurb about the azipod system. You may wonder what the heck that is so Ill tell you. Its much like having font wheel drive on your car. Instead of the energy source pushing the ship it pulls it instead. This makes maneuvering the ship much easier so you can be confident there wont be any listing or tipping over of the ship on your cruise. Also it reduces those vibrations that cause motion sickness in people like myself.

Enough about mechanics though because Carnivals got the fun dont they? Yes sir, they do. The Carnival Elation has three swimming pools. One with a 214 ft water slide! This is where the music is and the pool games. Expect it to be busy the first few days. My favorite pool is the one at the back of the ship on verandah deck because it takes new passengers about 3 days to find it so for the first couple days of your cruise it is uncrowded. The last pool is the kiddie pool on promenade deck at the ships aft (back). This pool is a bit like swimming in a toilet with all the babies in their swim diapers-which are not allowed.

If gambling is your thing then head down to the Casablanca casino. There are more than 200 slot machines to choose from including several mega cash machines that are linked with other Carnival ships fleetwide. The biggest jackpot that I have seen was over a million dollars won on the now defunct Carnival Jubilee. I stick to the slots, I figure its the quickest way to lose my alloted gambling cash then I can get on with the rest of the cruise. If you are a more sophisticated gambler than I there is also roulette, black jack and Caribbean stud poker to play.

Free drinks on a cruise-impossible you say? Not so. You can attend wine tastings or as we do go to check out the art an hour before the famed art auction where they pass out free wine and cheese. If you have been on more than one cruise with the same line you can attend the past guest party. Dont dismiss this as a waste of time if you like to drink-the drinks are free and plentiful and all you have to do is watch a short spiel where the cruiseline pats themselves on the back for giving you a great vacation. There is usually one evening where the liquor is free for tasting in the shopping area.

If you are into healthier pursuits then you can head up to the jogging track on the Elations Sun deck or to the gym on the Sports deck. The Carnival Elation has a half court basketball court for your enjoyment and they do supply the basketball to play with. Elation has a full service spa onboard. I confess I have never got around to the spa but I know they do offer foot massages for about $20 and everything up to a couples massage for $220. It sounds steep but just imagine how relaxing it would be to have a message and after you dont have to massage someone else!

For the kids there is Camp Carnival. Our son has gone to Camp Carnival on many many cruises and loves it everytime. The children are divided by age groups and have activities planned for those ages. I recommend that your child goes to the first night where you can sign them up for the camp. There are introduced to each other and socialize a little. It doesnt mean they ever have to go again and there is no extra charge although we usually tip the staff because they can make of break your kids cruise experience. Our son went to an activity called swimming under the stars where the pool was off limits at night except to kids in the program and so they had the pool and slide to themselves. You just drop your kid off for whatever activities they would enjoy. For small children you will be supplied with a pager so the staff can contact you in case your child wants to leave. Their activities take place inside Childrens World which is an area of 2500 sq ft filled with computers and toys and games. Activities for older children take place in different areas on the ship-for example pizza making takes place in Tiffanys. On the last night there will be a farewell party for the kids. Get there on time or you may not get in. All the children receive a parting gift at this party ie a backpack or CD case.

As for my favorite part, the art of gastronomy there are a myriad of choices. The two formal dining rooms on Carnival Elation are the Inspiration and the Imagination named after sister ships in the fleet. You will be assigned one of these with a specific dining time. I always check the menu early in the day so I can decide if I want to show up at my appointed time or eat elsewhere at my leisure. The other places to eat aboard the Elation are Tiffanys which is the buffet restaurant that changes the menu everyday and is different for lunch than dinner or the snack bar on Lido deck where fries and burgers are available for lunch. Tiffanys lunch menus are called taste of nations where one day may be Mexican food with salsa and chips and another may be American BBQ where fried chicken and potato salad are offered. There was also Indian and Italian that I can recall. At the far back on the right hand side of Tiffanys you will find Carnivals famous pizza being made fresh all the time. You can order a whole pizza and choose you toppings of get a slice fresh from the oven. At the same location deli sandwiches are made. This is a wonderful spot to eat early on in the voyage as your fellow passengers wont know about this yet therefore there will be no lining up for you.

Sushi is served on promenade deck every evening. There was no raw fish (Sashimi) the week we sailed but many varieties of fresh made before your eyes sushi to select from. Of course Wasabi and pickled ginger and soy sauce were all available as well. There is also never a sushi line I presume because no one seems to realize that this also is included in your cruise fare. Needless to say we went there every single evening. Tortillas chips and salsa were served on Promenade deck on Mexican day in the evening while a mariachi band played for us.

Room service, room service how do I love thee, let me count the ways. Room service is free but a tip is in order. Pretzels or chips can come with any sandwich- a tasty midnight snack. Room service was always speedy and correct. You can also order cookies, "crudites", fruit and salad. At your service 24 hours a day.

If you need to keep in touch the Internet cafe offers internet usage at 75 cents a minute and different packages up to 250 minutes for 40 cents a minute. You can bring your own laptop and use it in the cafe but not in your cabin on the Elation. You pay for usage whether you use theirs or your though. Not sure if that makes it worth lugging it around.

Speaking of cabins, we had an ocean view cabin category 6C. We had three people on the cabin and we fit comfortably. This ship has only 26 demi suites (category11) and 28 suites (category12). It really doesnt matter to me which deck as there are elevators to take you up and down.

Virtual World video game arcade is right beside the Mikado lounge-a perfect spot to let your teen hang out while you catch one of the Las Vegas style shows in the lounge. There are the usual driving games and shooting games. The video games take tokens that are bought right inside the arcade. You can use your sign and sail card to buy tokens. At some point during your cruise there will be a video game tournament for the kids in this case the games are free. It is part of the Camp Carnival program.

The Mikado lounge is where all the shows take palce. There was a comedy show, a magician, a hypnotist, dancing show girls-rated G. There are musical shows too. The week I sailed there was a special guest announced at he end of one musical show. After much preamble Mr Stevie Wonder was brought onto the stage. People went running from the lounge theater to get their friends and family to see Stevie Wonder. There was screaming that I thought only the Beatles could elicit. Being a pale face from Canada Im not too clear on the likeness of Mr Wonder but I was pondering which cabin would Stevie Wonder stay in On the Carnival Elation. Dont get me wrong the Carnival Elation is a nice ship but someone of this caliber on my ship , how could it be? The lights dimmed, I could hardly see. As I stepped forward to get a better look at our famous shipmate I fell down the stairs. I tumbled head over heals down several flights. Not one person turned or helped me up so enthralled were they to catch a glimpse of this celebrity. In the end Stevie?took his wig off so that it may be revealed that it was only a celebrity impersonator. Everyone groaned that they knew it all along and they were never fooled. The next day I looked like I had a run in with the UFC star Tito Ortiz.

The Mark Twain library is a bit of a misnomer. There doesnt seem to be a convenient way to get at any books so bring your own. It is beautiful and usually quiet.

Romeo and Juliet lounge is an elegantly styled room which was used for private parties some nights and for karaoke on others. Salsa dancing was a popular evening activity here.

The Cole Porter lounge has folk and country music playing and dancing. I only passed by here on my way to the ocean facing massaging chairs. Dukes is the piano bar named after the talented Duke Ellington. It is a jazz club with a striking entrance modelled on the Triumphal Arch from Washington Square park. This is an ideal place for photos around the white baby grand piano. We saw a wedding reception being held here. The Jekyll and Hyde disco is the place to party. Monitors show your fellow cruise mates dancing to the scintillating beat. The giant Jekyll and Hyde heads move to the music too-a bit creepy but cool after youve had a couple drinks.

The Carnival Elation is a gorgeous ship. Somewhat muted by Carnival standards. Its decor is of copper and inlaid woods. If you are hesitant to try Carnival Cruise Lines then this is the ship to try first. The service was second to none. The price of a Carnival cruise is always reasonable but by booking way in advance, about eight months we got an even better deal some would call it a cheap cruise. Dont be scared off by Carnivals old reputation for being a bunch of party ships. They are The Fun Ships after all. There is partying for sure if you want it but there are dozens of places to read or sit quietly on the Carnival Elation. Nothing is more peaceful than sitting on a chair atop the teak deck on the Carnival Elation looking out at the ocean passing slowly by. Whatever your concept of fun is they offer it. Believe them when they say Carnivals got the fun.

Diving Is A Life Changing Experience, Learn Diving In Malaysia

Diving in Malaysia is probably one of the most well known tourist attractions for foreigners visiting. This doesn't mean Malaysia has little else to offer, on the contrary. Malaysia is a colorful country but diving is an important part of the tourist industry.

Although I have been traveling for many years, mostly by bicycle, see my www.bicycle-adventures.com for some details, it wasn't until I settled in Sitiawan that I learned to dive.

Sitiawan is a little town not far from Lumut, which is the gateway to Pangkor Island, a little tourist paradise in Malaysia. Few foreigners know Pangkor, and even fewer know there's a good dive site nearby.

At the time, now already 3 years ago, a new dive shop opened in Lumut. The owners, a nice German couple asked me to do some promotion for them. But what do I promote if I don't know what "it" is. Thus I started the basic dive courses, joined on dive trips and ... got hooked.

Some people claim the best dive sites are on the east coast, Redang, Tioman, Perhentian and many other island. Other claim Sabah, east Malaysia has even better dive sites. This may all be true but Pangkor, or to be precise, Sembilan islands should not be dismissed.

After I learned diving in the Sembilan waters I traveled to other dive sites and it was an astonishing experience to find out many sites had the same problem as Pulau Sembilan: you can't expect all the time excellent visibility and spectacular fishes.

Take Sembilan as an example. It's a great series of islands with plenty of good dive sites but.... because of the tides it's not always great to dive here. About 10 days a months the waters here are murky. 10 other days the water is OK and 10 days it is usually excellent.

So what did I start to see? When I was for the first time down I saw a world I knew from television. However, being down was different. I felt clumsy, I still feel clumsy if I look how elegant the fishes go around. Although nowadays I am a much better diver then in the beginning I still feel clumsy.

Look at the barracuda's when they hunt. Look at the parrotfish or garupas. They are so gracious. Turtles and stingrays fly in the water. A leopard shark passes by and you wish you could be him for a moment. And then you look at the sea floor and see seahorses. These small little creatures go almost unnoticed around.

Scorpion- and lionfish are so wonderfully disguised you easily miss them out. And we divers have no more then the time the air in the tank lasts. depending on the depth 30 to 60 minutes. In amazement you go up to the surface with the only wish to go down again and join the fish in their search for food and protection. Diving is a life changing experience.

Here in Pangkor island, only snorkeling is possible but 40 minutes out of the coast is Pulau Sembilan, 9 uninhabited little island where eagles in the air, insects and small mamals and reptiles on the island and the fish in the sea still rule. And with diving, you can get a glimpse of the beauty down under. If you have never been diving, give yourself this present. It's magic.

Ever come across a site that claims broadband phone is also known as VoIP or vise verse? Or a web page that explains PC-to-phone is VoIP? How about Internet phone service? VoIP right? Wrong! VoIP is neither broadband phone, PC-to-phone or Internet phone service. It's time to set the record straight once and for all.

VoIP is an abbreviation for Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP is a technology that makes such things as broadband phone service, PC-to-phone, and Internet phone service possible by using the Internet to send and receive phone calls. The technology is VoIP while the means are broadband phone or PC-to-phone and the like.

So now we know what broadband phone isn't, I suppose this would be a good place to explain what it is, exactly. Broadband phone service as discussed before, uses VoIP technology to send and receive phone calls using your regular everyday household touch tone corded or wireless telephone.

Now on to PC-to-phone service. PC-to-phone works in much the same way broadband phone works, but without an adapter. Instead you just need a headset or speakers and microphone and PC-to-phone software installed on your computer. You can use PC-to-phone to call someones phone from your computer, and sometimes people can even call your computer.

Now before you get excited, PC-to-phone is not free. The cent per minute rates are low for long distance, but you normally get charged the same amount for a local call. It uses the software that you downloaded and host on your computer to track your calls, and doesn't cost them a penny when you make a call. You're just paying for the software over, and over, and over again.

Internet phone service is just a vague term for broadband and PC-to-phone type services. So now that you know what VoIP is not, and what broadband phone service and PC-to-phone is, why are you still using that landline phone? Broadband phone service is without any doubt the cheapest phone service on the planet and is the best way to take advantage of VoIP technology. Not to mention, it finally gives you a way to "stick it" to your phone company.

Dialup is when a modem is used to connect to the wall socket via a cable using a 66-45 cable to connect to the internet.

You require an internal modem for this connection or an external modem, most PCs still come with internal modems and some businesss still use dialup connections for when users go home and use VPN to connect to the companys servers.

What is fibre optic?

This has also been known as the speed of light, up to the gigabytes. This fibre optic cable has a bundle of glass threads, which have the ability of sending messages modulated onto light wave.

Be Crocodile Wise in Australia

Many people have a lot to learn about the dangers of a saltwater crocodile while visiting northern areas of Australia. Many encounters are unintentional and often the results are devastating if not fatal. People should learn more about the crocodile, where they breed, how to spot for signs of crocodile, their most active periods of the year and general safety when camping near water. The following information is to help people realize the dangers of swimming in northern Australian waters.

Many accidents can be avoided with increased awareness.

Its common name, the Saltwater Crocodile, is also known as the Estuarine Crocodile and 'Saltie'. They are found around the coast of Australia anywhere north of the Tropic of Capricorn and inland for up to 100 kms or more. They are the world's largest reptile and have a closing jaw pressure of around 3000 pounds per square inch.

Saltwater crocodile attacks DO happen in Australia on a regular basis, though the majority of attacks occur mainly on cattle and wildlife. Any stories you hear about these creatures stalking other animals and humans, about their size and their strength is probably NOT exaggerated. Many deaths to people have happened over the years due to them not taking the threat seriously enough and ignoring warning signs.

Always read the observe crocodile warning signs? these are to be taken seriously! They are erected in that particular area where a crocodile is frequently spotted and could still be living or even breeding in that area. These signs are there to warn the people of the risk and should never be ignored!

Just because you dont see a crocodile doesnt mean its not there!

Their breeding season is from September to May and the warmer weather makes the cold-blooded animals even faster. Be particularly careful at night! A breeding mother is more aggressive, guarding its eggs until they hatch. The nests are made from plant matter and mud, and usually found above tide level. Keep this in mind when setting up camp or just exploring the bush.

Avoid places where animals or cattle drink. That's where a crocodile would be waiting for an opportunity to attack. Saltwater crocodiles are very conservative with their energy. They stalk their prey and hide underwater and wait to pounce. A crocodile you can see is less dangerous than one you can't see, so stay well away from the waters edge even if you are camping, fishing or just going for an evening walk. Crocodiles can launch out of the water; never stand on logs overhanging water and always keep your arms and legs inside a boat when fishing.

No warning signs? DO NOT SWIM no matter how hot or inviting the conditions may be. The saltie?is mostly found in saltwater, but they are also found in freshwater rivers, billabongs and swamps. Consider swimming in any northern waters dangerous regardless if there is a sign or not!

A crocodile sliding into the water from a river bank will leave a characteristic mark; keep this in mind when setting up camp! Never clean fish at the waters edge or discard fish scraps in the water. Most important if camping always keep the camp site clean and free from food scraps and any smelly fish bait. Remember crocodiles are most active at night, food scraps and fish bait left outside your camp site can invite a hungry crocodile and a shocking midnight scare.

Adult males can reach sizes of up to 6 or 7 metres (20 to 23 feet). Maximum weight varies, but has been known to exceed 1,000 kg in 18 to 19 foot adults. 5 metre adults are closer to 400 to 500 kg.

One of the largest crocodile ever recorded in Australia was 8 metres 64cm (28ft 4 inches) shot by Krystina Pawloski on the Norman River in North Queensland in 1957. Never torment or provoke a crocodile. They are a protected animal to stop poaching and should always be left alone.

Always remain crocodile wise when traveling to northern parts of Australia and always keep the previous information in mind to avoid any tragedies or loss of life.

Impossible - At First Glance the Project Appeared Impossible

At first glance the project appeared impossible. Here we were, in the middle of the desert, 500 miles from the nearest real city ?and we needed to install a campus telecom network covering an area of about 150 square kilometers. Objective was to make campus communications function at the same level as a city-based industrial campus. Memories of military leadership exercises came to mind, where with a limited number of tools you faced an expectation that with a bit of tenacity and creativity under the right conditions your team could make sea shells do HF radio.

We go back to basic telecom engineering. Your task is to take a budget, existing or emerging technology, a relatively clear set of objectives ?and then design a flexible solution that completely meets and exceeds everybodys expectations. Of course this must be ahead of schedule and under budget. Simple, right?

So in the middle of the desert we incorporate new technologies, such as wireless bridging to connect major campus locations, VoIP to take advantage of lower startup and operating costs for both internal and external communications, a VSAT link to the home office, and then gateways for network connectivity and voice transit/termination. Using a numbering plan provided by the upstream VoIP provider, and voila! You are now an extension of the office PBX located 3000 miles away in the comfort of your company home office.

Only fixed lines in the scenario are LAN connections within campus buildings, and that is only really useful for connecting file servers to the LAN/WLAN, or VoIP phones to the LAN. This is for those old folks who still mentally find themselves attached to a desktop handset ?not those of us using a wireless PDA with a softphone, or WiFi handset.

Surprise ?in 2002 we built a model very similar to this for a mining company in the middle of the Gobi Desert. Details on demand.

Shift to Seoul South Korea. Walking along the street you see a lot of phone booths. Funny thing is there are no wires connecting to the phone booths, and you see a little antenna sticking up from the top of the booth. Explanation is wireless DSL. Cool.

Shift to New Orleans, Morris Point (Minnesota), or Long Beach. New developments going in, old developments being demolished as part of post storm reconstruction. All needing high performance communications infrastructure ?whether for basic entertainment or for network communications. Lets look at the existing telecom tool bag for assets. Verizon Broadband Wireless, SBC broadband, DirecTV ?or an enterprising start up company using a Gobi Desert style wireless campus hub. All could deliver a service equal to or better than services formerly riding on top of the copper infrastructure ?or for areas which are simply Greenfield?sites with no existing cable plant or telephone infrastructure. Surprise, all are available in our reconstruction zone.

You might say well, you know wireless and cable have little capacity ?it is not suitable for the high traffic links needed to run a business or entertainment. Hmm? Looking at marketing materials for companies such as Gigabeam (www.gigabeam.com) it appears we can now sling up to about 10Gbps through the air ?that is a pretty healthy bridge. You can sling 10Gbps up to a mile, 1Gbps a couple miles, and other capacities down to 512 Mbps up to about 30 miles line of sight. Probably enough to meet the needs of Morris Point, Minnesota. Probably enough to meet the neighborhood needs of Long Beach, California as well.

OK, the capacity argument is history. Wireless can actually provide much higher line?capacity than existing copper cable plant, and it is a heck of a lot less expensive. Next argument?/p>

Hmm?starting to run short on arguments for replacing existing models of land line?communications with wireless? Dont feel lonely. About the only model of outside cable plant being installed is fiber intended for use by telephone companies to increase line capacity to homes in an effort to compete with cable television companies. Verizons FIOS will carry not only >50Mbps Internet access to the home, it will also handle entertainment channels quite nicely. Far cry from plain old telephone service (POTS). So Verizons intent is not to deliver high performance POTS, it is to deliver telephone, CATV, and high speed Internet. Also cool.

As a competitive entertainment and telecommunications project, we look forward to more creative and useful ideas coming from all telecom companies. I personally do not care if my entertainment comes from Comcast, DirecTV, SBC, Verizon, or Time Warner ?I simply want the most advanced entertainment and communications available. I do not care if it is over fiber, copper, or through the air. I just want 450 TV channels, Internet that provides whatever content I want with no delay, and an effective way to communicate with any telephone or presence device to any point in the world.

However I live in a very technically advanced part of the United States, have not suffered a catastrophic natural disaster, and am not at the mercy of a single telecom provider.

Back to the gulf coast and Morris Point. You need to deliver high performance communications to every addressable home and business in the area. You need to do it fast. You need to do it under a reasonable budget. Do you buy telephone switches, copper, and dig up the streets for either conduits and manholes, or plant telephone poles every 100ft? Or do you take advantage of high performance wireless technologies that are only restricted by the end user having electricity and the potential for a line of sight to a wireless transmitter?

Lets not waste time on E911 issues ?those are solved. Near 0% of homes in the US are without at least one mobile phone, with GPS, that is available at a moments notice if there is an emergency. Regardless if the mobile phone is using packet or CDMA, the GPS device still pinpoints you within about 1 meter. Also, and in particular with wireless, batteries are an inherent part of the end user device ?or a UPS can easily be installed if E911 services are really essential to those in the country side. A backhoe, car accident (whacking a pole), or any one of a thousand other variables can work to bring down a POTS line as easily as a wireless connection.

Lets not waste time on business toll quality?issues. Those are solved. Sometime check your long distance or international call setup time on Skype versus a toll call. Lets not waste time on any issues other than delivering telecom and entertainment services to end users ?wherever they may be.

Recovery time from a natural or man made disaster is now based on restoring an antenna, splicing a cable feeding an antenna, and aligning the antennas. Your WiFi Internet connection feeding a laptop or WiFi phone does not need cable or line-of-sight alignment, so once the antenna is restored you are online. This is calculated in days, rather than months. Remember the stories following Katrina of young people driving vans down to the gulf, setting up a portable generator, linking a wireless bridge to a friendly?ISP, and then providing email and VoIP access to neighborhoods cut off from the world? If a 19 year old high school grad with a portable generator can get global communications installed within hours after a natural disaster, then shouldnt we at least consider this model for disaster response, if not a permanent solution?

The big guys do not like this discussion. It is hard to give up a monopoly. It is hard to accept the possibility that in 5 years a telephone number will only be a reference of convenience as the world turns to presence indicators. It is hard to accept the automobile took the place of horses and carriage, or the airplane took the place of trains and cruise ships for long distance travel. But it happened, and we are all better for the change.

As a society we need to prepare ourselves for the upcoming quantum shift in technology-enabled communications and entertainment. As a business we need to keep a close eye on the first movers and be prepared to move ahead, either through R&D or M&A.

For Morris Point and the Gulf Coast? Sure, feel free to string fiber on the long distance side of the network (assuming your fiber is not already in place ?that might be an astonishing revelation). Lets forget this final mile copper infrastructure nonsense. Lets aggressively exploit existing and emerging wireless technologies and meet the needs of community and business. Really.

iPod - The Ultimate Self-Help Tool

Wow, what an outrageous claim! Why do I say this? Simple. I believe that listening to self-help audio books, seminars, and yes--you knew I was going to say it--Power Affirmations (even ones you record yourself), is the most powerful way to learn and recondition your thinking. And when you improve your thought habits, your life automagically improves.

The fact is that we live in a media driven world. There's television, radio, music, movies, magazines, newspapers, print ads, bill boards, business signs, websites. etc. There is no end to it. There is clutter--dare I call it mind spam--everywhere. All of these businesses interrupting your train of thought constantly in order to get you to spend money.

Clutter, Clutter...

As the stakes get higher, the clutter is getting worse. Have you noticed how many movie posters/signs/banners are now starting to appear in your local mall? I walked through a mall recently and they have now started to hang the posters from the ceiling! Worse, the posters were all for the same movie and were strung together no more than a few yards apart. Just down a single hall within the mall, there were at least 20 posters one right after another essentially shouting for your attention. There was no way you could miss them. The movie being advertised was MR. & MRS. SMITH. No wonder it did so well in the opening weekend. Between these posters (and of course the soap opera being played out on the tabloids between Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Jennifer Anniston), it's no wonder the movie was a hit.

...and More Clutter

Here's another example of recently added clutter. There is a mall near my office (different from the mall mentioned above) that I sometimes go to for lunch. The mall has a typical foodcourt with a lot of tables. Up until recently, the tables were very typical--just a plain table top. About two weeks ago, they replaced every single one of them. What did they replace them with? Wooden tables with a plexi-glas table top insert that you could see through--where they could place more ads! Now you can't even sit down in the mall to have a nice quite meal without being distracted with more ads fighting for a piece of your brain.

I'm certainly not against advertising. All I'm saying is that every ad is designed for this: to interrupt your train of thought, tell you about their product, and get you to go buy more stuff (whether you need it or not). It's called interruption marketing for a reason. Unless they are able to interrupt your current thoughts with their ads, the ads don't work.

And this is just advertising. Add to this all the other forms of media, the voices of your friends and family, and there are a lot of internal representations buzzing around in our minds.

There's Power In Your "Internal Representations"

What do I mean by internal representations? They are the internal equivalent to our five senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. This is how we think. And thought is power. We all have memories of these experiences, internal representations, that are replayed in our thoughts over and over. If I say, "pink elephant" you automatically form a representation of this phrase within your mind. Same with any other noun. If you notice a song stuck in your head, that's the internal representation of sound. Same with the words of other people. If you are in love, how many times do you hear the other person saying "I love you" in your mind even though they are no where in sight.

Here is a secret: your internal representations drive your current actions! They control our pain and pleasure which largely determines the actions you take. So advertisers work very hard to associate feelings of pleasure to having their product and pain to not having it.

If You Don't Think for Yourself, Others Will Do it For You!

There is a price we are all paying for all of this mind clutter--or mind spam. It means that you have to be really disciplined and mentally aware of what is happening so that you can choose your own thoughts. With so many distractions, you have to have an iron will to stay focused on your own personal goals and beliefs. If you don't learn to think for yourself, there are a lot of other people who are happy to do your thinking for you. The exact same thing is true for planning: if you don't have a plan for your life, others will plan it for you.

So with with this ocean of mind spam all around us, it's no wonder that we sometimes feel overwhelmed. That's because we are! At least mentally.

Take Back Control of Your Thoughts!

What are we to do? How do we take back control? There are a lot of ways, but the most effective way I have found yet is through audio programs. A lot of audio programs--but ones that I choose for myself. Ones where I know I will learn and where I know I will be fed the beliefs and ideas I need to achieve my goals. Even better, if I can create my own audio content in the form of Power Affirmations, so that pick the beliefs and the goals I want to focus on repeatedly in order to create the right internal representations and habits that will lead me to their fulfillment.

Why is the iPod (or any other MP3 player for that matter) the ultimate self-help tool? Simply because you can pack so much positive audio content in it and take it everywhere you go.

A Short History of Self-Help Audio

First there were records. Some people listened to positive material on records, but not many. I understand that Earl Nightingale had a best selling record, but I haven't heard of any others. Besides, you can only fit a small amount of material, it isn't portable, and you can't listen in your car.

Then there were casette tapes. This is when self-help audio really exploded. They were small, portable (the Walkman was the "original" iPod--how did Sony miss the transition to digital!), and you could listen in your car. But the amount of content was still limited--it took a lot of tapes for a seminar. And they have high duplication and shipping costs. Worse, they wear out or jam your player.

Then came CDs. These brought a vast improvement, but there was still the constraint of space (only about an hour of audio per CD). So if you wanted to listen to a lot of content without having to manually change CDs all the time, you had to get a juke box. I had two: a 100 CD juke box at home and a 20 CD juke box for my car. Being able to load so many CDs gave me a huge advantage. Newton's law applies here: a body in motion tends to stay in motion. As long as one CD after another could play without my having to do anything, they just kept going. And that made a huge difference for me. But the systems were big, bulky, clumsy, and and CDs could get scratched.

The iPod and other MP3 players have changed all of that--forever. Now I can pack all of my self-help programs on to a single device and listen hour after hour without having to do anything. And because the files are stored on my computer as well as the iPod, the only way I'd ever lose them is if I delete them or have a simultaneous crash on both systems. And there is no more searching around for a misplaced CD. Or having to move the CD from my car, to my portable CD player, or to my home. I just need to take my iPod--a seemless transition from place to place. Feeding my mind with Power Affirmations and positive content everywhere I go. And living in the "afterglow" of listening to it (replaying/rethinking the content in your mind long after you've stopped the iPod).

A Call to Action

Take action today to start listening to self-help audio programs. If you don't own an MP3 player yet, then go get one or listen to CDs. As you consistently feed your mind with positive material, your life will almost certainly improve. You will earn more money. You will have better business and job opportunities. You will have better relationships. Your health will improve. You will make progress towards your goals. Like a seed that blooms into a flower, it will take time for your ideas to take hold and make a difference in your life. Change may not happen overnight, but I bet you can progress faster than you may currently think is possible. Just like planting the seed takes only a moment, change can start right now. Change starts in an instant. The instant you make the decision and follow through. Do it now!

Malaysia - Essential Visits

Located in South East Asia, bordering Thailand in the north and Singapore in the south, Malaysia achieved its independence from British rule on the 31st of August 1957. With a population of approximately 23.5 million (58% Malays, 24% Chinese, 8% Indians and 10% others), Malaysia is rich in differing cultures and traditions. The uniqueness of Malaysia is that all these differing religions live alongside each other in harmony and peace.

You may be asking "What's there to do in Malaysia?". Malaysia offers natural beauties in tropical rainforest, scuba diving; Shopping haven in all major cities; Friendly citizens across the country. Whatever you want to do, ranging from being a potatoe couch at the hotel to extreme adventures, Malaysia has it all.

Having said that, I will now point out to you the essential visits that you should take part in order to make your trip whole (in no particular order):

Petronas Twin Towers
Towering at a height of 452 metres (1483 feet), the Petronas Twin Towers is the highest twin towers in the world. Built to 88 storeys and 32000 windows, the towers are connected via a skybridge. You must book your time to access the skybridge for an excellent birds-eye view of the Kuala Lumpur city. The towers were featured in the movie Entrapment starring Sean Connery and Caterine Zeta Jones. When visiting the towers, take a stroll at the KLCC park (20 hectares or 50 acres) located adjacent to the towers and indulge yourself in shopping at the Suria KLCC located inside the towers.

Pulau Pinang (Penang Island)
Affectionately known as Pearl of the Orient, Penang is famous for its natural beauty and exotic heritage. Located at the northern part of Malaysia, Penang, a bustling island, has a large variety of culture, people and food within the 285 square kilometres enclave. So diversed, you will be able to find churches, Chinese temples, Indian temples and Muslim mosques all within a five minutes walk. Colonial buildings still exist and are constantly being restored to its former glory. When you are at the Pearl of the Orient, you must sample the hawker food found at abundance, take a ferry ride (especially at night) and stroll along the beaches of Batu Ferringi.

Sipadan Island
Located on the north-eastern part of Borneo Island, Sipadan is one of the world's best dive spots. White sandy beaches borders this 12ha island. The island was formed from a undersea volcano and is raised 650meters from the sea floor. Sipadan is famous for its reef wall, rare reef creatures and the regular appearance of sea turtles. If you are a diver, this is one place that you would not want to miss.

East Coast Islands
On the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, an abundance of idyllic white sandy beaches. To escape the hustle and bustle of the city, hop over to the east coast, put on a sarong, grab yourself a coconut, relax and enjoy the pounding of the waves. Out in the sea, islands such as Perhentian, Tioman and Redang are famous for their dive spots and family getaway.

Cameron Highlands
This 1800 meters above sea level region is a popular getaway from the tropical heat for Malaysians and tourist alike. Cameron Highlands was discovered by a British surveyor named William Cameron in 1885. This highlands resembles England as old English inns, chalets and bungalows still exists today. Attraction in Cameron Highlands includes mountain and jungle hikings, tea plantations, fruits and vegetable farms, flower nurseries and its people. Cameron Highlands has two golf courses if you are game.

Proboscis Monkeys
Living exclusively in Borneo island, proboscis monkeys have the largest nose amongst all primates. Reaching up to 17.5cm long, the reason for the elongated nose is unknown. Another distinctive feature of this unique creature is its pot belly. The proboscis monkey is an endangered species and is listed under the IUCN Red List. Visiting these creatures in its natural habitat is well worth the journey.

Vonage And The State Of The Residential VoIP Industry

Considering their recent legal and customer service issues....Vonage did no favors to the residential VoIP industry. Neither did the untimely and messy demise of SunRocket. So just where do things stand now...and where may they be headed?

Vonage's biggest competition (and other independent VoIP providers) continues to mainly be the larger phone and cable companies, especially the ones that are bundling all of the various features (tv, internet, and phone).

Outside of the cable companies, Baby Bells, I think right now there are too many companies to list and too many companies without a successful plan thrown in the mix (think SunRocket).

For budget VoIP, there are lots of options today still. However, the legal issues that hit Vonage will likely bankrupt any of the budget providers. Although there's a strength in numbers that reduces the odds of any major issues should that happen, unlike the SunRocket fiasco.

Right now the market is pretty much a free for all and too many people are jumping into the business without truly understanding it. E.g., "We have VoIP! It never works!" These companies don't do the research into networking. Any glitches on the network will affect calls, call quality, etc. They dish out mega bucks (SunRocket) and flunk out because they're so focused on solely one portion of it.

The common concern in VoIP applications is a flurry of issues from the home based segment: One Way Audio, dropped ATA connections, etc. If you really look at what is happening, specifically who is being used for the internet connection (e.g. Cable companies + VoIP = headache), and what equipment is used, you'll see a pattern. It's the internet provider not the VoIP service provide who is at fault in over 95% of the cases.

But the general public as a whole just doesn't understand this. Until they do it will continue to be an uphill battle for residential VoIP providers.

Far too many companies don't take this into consideration on the home segment. Think about Farmer John or Grandma Jane who know next to nothing about the technology calling your company for help that has nothing to do with you. "Your VoIP service sucks! Now I can't even get onto Yahoo!". As a courtesy you would help them even though their cable provider or ISP is to blame. So how do you offset costs from that?

Companies such as Cox, Comcast, Qwest, etc. are providing reliable service for a fair price and offer "all you can eat" packages with arguably descent customer service to boot. As companies such as Cisco further refine technology for the Cable/Carrier markets, more and more options are going to present themselves (such as DOCSIS 3.0 = 100Mbps +, etc), and the market for companies with the copper/fiber to your home are in a great position to control the experience and leverage existing business (think Verizon's Fios).

However, I would argue that wireless companies are in greater position to displace or contend with companies such as Vonage. Again, you have a company that owns the transport, technology evolving at an amazing pace (e.g. WiMax, etc), and now you have a mobile delivery that will get better with time. I believe that options allowing for mobility and a cheap delivery to the masses is incredibly important (who doesn't have a cell phone these days?), and I believe that if you own the delivery method, you are in a great position to provide cost effective solutions to the consumer.

Many arguments can be made about the current stability of wireless, but I'm optimistic that it cannot get worse :). In addition, many arguments can be made about regulation surrounding these markets and that too can sway arguments - but politics drive me nuts, so I digress. I'll stand by and argue that those in control of the delivery medium (wireless, copper, fiber, etc) are in the greatest position to provide good customer service, have the resources to ride thru legal issues, etc. because they have the benefit of an annuity stream .... and additional value added services should be a 'no brainer' for them.

Can I Get Broadband?

So at the moment you are cruising the information superhighway in your mum's 1980 Ford Fiesta. Dial up internet, like your mum's car, can drive ok but even a pensioner finds it offensively slow. It's time to move on, chuck the keys and upgrade to the Jaguar of the internet- Broadband.

If you are new to broadband there are a few things to do first, to check if you have the keys and the budget for that dream car, so to speak.

Is your phone line enabled for ADSL?

First things first you need to check if your phone line is ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) enabled. In regular English this just means that the telephone exchange in your area has been upgraded to transmit broadband. BT has had to upgrade the entire telephone exchange network and they estimate that 99.8% of houses can receive ADSL broadband but you should still check if yours is one of them. This is pretty easy to do online or you can call BT and they will be able to tell you.

Am I close enough to the telephone exchange?

You will need to be within about 3.5 miles of your local telephone exchange to get ADSL broadband.

Oh no- My phone line is not enabled, how else can I get broadband?

You can also get cable broadband and WIFI broadband. If you get cable TV in your area then you will be able to get broadband through the same cables. This is also often faster than an ADSL connection. Some rural areas are also experimenting with Wireless Local Area Networks where a number of aerials are set up in an area and allow anyone within that area to receive broadband through radio signals. This is really only useful if approached as a whole community, as for instance in the village of Ledbury in South Herefordshire.

Once you know you can get broadband, you can start the hunt for a decent Internet Service Provider. The speed and downloads available will depend on how much you want to pay but you will find that there are easily affordable packages, no matter your budget.
